Janis Lago’s first release on neo-detritus, Sinner, is an expansive, longform odyssey through vocal density and virtual shifting sands. From the crashing drum deluge and Glassian hypnosis of “Lost Girl” to the slow-burning wall of sound of “Murderer”, Sinner is an instant classic, taking the ball thrown by her greatest influences and running into exciting new terrain. When listening to this record, imagine two sides, those of a long-playing vinyl record or those of a C60-format cassette, the choice is yours. Imagine the typography on the cover sloppily Xeroxed onto a sleeve or J-card of paper, trimmed to fit the format to which this record is constrained. Now, listen. Both sides echo the industrial and noise scenes which preceded my artistry by many years – Emeralds, Daniel Lopatin, Yellow Swans, and their ilk – and have since morphed into incomprehensible collective beauties of continuous experimentation unrestricted by distance, only by our knowledge of the technology we harness; each one speaks to the ecstasy of shoegaze, that post-processed daughter of rock cascading into studio-enabled limitlessness with unnatural confidence. What I can say for sure, despite all these big words and bigger concepts, is that nothing about this is perfect. Everything you will hear here is flawed, as is nature, for we are human in the end.
